Are extra shifts taxed differently?

Extra shifts are taxed at your marginal tax rate — the tax band your income falls into after your basic salary. For most Band 5 staff, this means 20% income tax + 8% NI = 28% deducted from extra earnings. Higher earners (above ~£50,270) will see 40% tax + 2% NI on additional income.

What counts as unsocial hours?

Under Agenda for Change Section 2, Saturday and weekday night hours (8pm–6am) attract a 30% uplift (41% for Band 2). Sundays and Bank Holidays attract a 60% uplift (83% for Band 2). Regular weekday shifts are paid at your basic hourly rate.

Is this for bank shifts or overtime?

This works for both NHS bank shifts and rostered overtime. The pay calculation is the same — based on your substantive band's hourly rate with the appropriate unsocial hours enhancement. Bank shifts are usually paid at the same rate unless your trust offers enhanced bank rates.

How accurate is the tax calculation?

We use 2024/25 UK tax bands and National Insurance rates. The calculator estimates your marginal rate based on your base salary, so extra shift income is taxed accordingly. For most NHS staff, this gives a very accurate figure. It does not account for student loan deductions or Scottish tax rates — use our main NHS calculator for those details.
